Elephant Mama is my own term for those of us doing our best every day to raise our kids with love and wisdom, humor and intention. The elephant is known in the animal kingdom as being a fierce protector and a gentle nurturer. Deeply committed to their children, elephants live in a matriarchal society where they rely upon the wisdom of other females in the herd. The Elephant Mamas blog is inspired by these gentle giants. It is a community for sharing and supporting each other on the journey of motherhood.
Elephant Mamas provide unconditional love. Each kid comes with their own roadmap and it’s our job to help them discover this path, rather than guiding them to the path we may have once envisioned.
Elephant Mamas glean wisdom from those around us. Our parents, brothers, sisters, friends, colleagues, teachers, and neighbors have all walked this journey and we eagerly soak up their knowledge.
Humor is key to enjoying the Elephant Mama journey. While I don’t know if elephants share jokes, I have seen them frolic in the water and they do know how to have fun! We need to laugh not only at the funny things our kids do and say, but also the craziness in our own lives.
Elephant Mamas raise their kids with intention. We step away from the paradoxical moments of chaos and monotony that threaten to rule our lives if we run on auto-pilot. We may have already identified what is most important to our family or we may still be seeking these answers. We make choices, rather than just being along for the ride.
