Opting Out

If you Google “opting out” and “parents” you’ll get over 3 million responses that focus primarily on standardized tests and vaccines. Nope, not my topic! I want to talk about opting out of the everyday things that parents are “expected” to do. I’m not sure who wrote the imaginary rulebook, but shouldn’t we all get to write our own rules? I have veered from many traditions and for many different reasons–mostly time, money, and principle–but the list below is specific to my family.

School Pictures – Having the 8x10s lined up on the walls of the staircase was the thing of the 1970s, but [Read more…]

Raising Your Spirited Child

WidsomBeyond your friends and family (who all have lots of well-intended suggestions!), there are plenty of other parenting resources including books, blogs, classes, and even TV shows. I’ve dipped my toe in all of them, but one book stands out above and beyond all the rest.spirited child

Elephant Mama (or Elma for short!) is my own term for moms doing our best every day to raise our kids with love, wisdom, humor and intention. The elephant is known in the animal kingdom for being a fierce protector and a gentle nurturer.  Deeply committed to their children, elephants live in a matriarchal society where they rely upon the wisdom of other females in the herd. The Elephant Mamas blog is inspired by these gentle giants. It is a community for sharing and supporting each other on the journey of motherhood.

Elephant Mamas provide unconditional love. Each kid comes with their own roadmap and it’s our job to help them discover this path, rather than guiding them to the path we may have once envisioned.
